Mediation Training
The Department of Justice is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). As a program area of the RTO, the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria (DSCV) is authorised to deliver six units from the CHC4230, Certificate IV in Mediation. We offer these units in our six day, Mediation Training – Theory of Practice course.
The training is delivered by Nationally Accredited Mediators and is located in Melbourne.
This program is an essential requirement for anyone wanting to become a DSCV mediator. It is also suitable for people who want to become a mediator in other areas or who simply want to improve their conflict resolution skills.
Mediation training program
We deliver the following six units from the Certificate IV of Mediation:
- CHCCOM403A - Use targeted communication skills to build relationships
- CHCMED413A - Manage communication processes to define the dispute
- CHCMED414A - Facilitate mediation processes
- CHCMED415A - Facilitate interaction between parties in mediation
- CHCMED416B - Consolidate and conclude the mediation process
- CHCMED417B - Reflect and improve upon professional mediation practice
The six units are delivered as an integrated six-day package. The course is usually conducted in three two-day blocks to give participants time to consolidate and practise the skills learned.
DSCV uses a range of teaching methods, including group activities, coached role plays and written exercises.
Participants need to attend all six days to obtain competency in the units, as the units are not delivered sequentially. Assessment is by observation of role play, usually in the last two days of the course. There are also daily written tasks that contribute towards the assessment.
Participants have the choice of being assessed at the end of the training and, if successful, may be invited to join the DSCV panel as a gazetted mediator.
Pre-requisites
There are no formal pre-requisites, but the first unit, CHCCOM403A ‘Use specialist communication skills to build relationships’, is a pre-requisite to completing the other units.
A certain degree of English proficiency, literacy and numeracy is assumed. If you have concerns about this or have other special needs, please contact the DSCV Training Officer to discuss our Access and Equity Policy, and see how we can accommodate your needs.
Cost of training
DSCV mediator training depends on demand and Centre needs. The full price is $2,500* per head for the full six-day training course. This is competitive with similar courses and includes a high coach-to-participant ratio. However, we advise you check our current pricing structure at the time of enrolling.
Training dates
The training courses are run 3 or 4 times a year, depending on the level of demand. Contact DSCV to check on course dates. Training takes place in Melbourne.
How to enrol
If you wish to enrol in the course, contact the DSCV Melbourne office. You must complete the enrolment form and post, fax or email it back to us. If there are no places available in the course for the dates you’ve chosen, we will notify you and advise when the next course will be held.
